Oddisee - The Gold is Mine

Rarely do I wait impatiently like a child on Christmas Eve, but after hearing the first leaked track I knew this 4 song EP would be something special. To me Oddisee is the genome for hip-hop. With top notch lyrics only exacerbated by production worthy of a royal seal, he consistently generates music that embodies the virtues of an art form that's currently tarnished. But don't be dissuaded by a little rust, with artists like Oddisee that tarnish quickly becomes a priceless patina. I'll let him hammer it home with a verse I feel personalizes my point.

See it's all about exchange it ain't all about the fame
I'm living upper middle class and people hardly know my name
Cause the dollars that I gain ain't at the course of rotting brains
I'm from a time that's been forgotten where the scholars entertain

Lyrics: Oddisee - The Gold is Mine

So get yourself fixed up
I'll take you out around town
I swear you'll never witness anything quite as fine
Fake gold the gold is mine
Not bronze nor silver I'm forever winning
Not the given but my own definition
Fake gold the gold is mine
Not bronze nor silver I'm forever winning
Not the given but my own definition
Fake gold the gold is mine

Take a seat in any city I know spots to eat
The rougher side of town I'm around a less is proper bleak
Made it Paris without the use of a private jet
Checking in an Ibis yet check me out I'm the flyest yet
They exhibitionist still we both in the exhibition
For them to be seen and for me to see the collection listen
Most of my people they're missing out on the point of living
To be rich or enriched is our own decision
Pron to the latter but most of my people isn't
They focus different they tend to see me as broken vision
Man look I'm trying to be a leader
If I'm shining well that's the blind leading the blind
Women want me because they think I complete them
I just compliment them better than some nigga that's beneath them
I ain't talking bout remarks about their hair or what they wear
I'm just a puzzle piece when mothers start to ask when can I meet him
Yeah I know my road so we rolling
We in a part of town where I know she don't be going
Prices rather cheaper the decor is rather meager
But it's nice it's all about the spice that they throw in
Light life off I ain't showing
For real

So get yourself fixed up
I'll take you out around town
I swear you'll never witness anything quite as fine
Fake gold the gold is mine
Not bronze nor silver I'm forever winning
Not the given but my own definition
Fake gold the gold is mine
Not bronze nor silver I'm forever winning
Not the given but my own definition
Fake gold the gold is mine

I'm so last minute dot com
I have you sitting next to palms where the weather's rather warm
And that's the type of shit that I be on
Spontaneity with charm and it ain't costing me an arm
Legs up as I'm looking at the Adriatic
My hustle off down time young I got to have it
But not for long yes I'm a workaholic
Drunk off the feeling of getting it cracking
Thinking there something put it to action
Seeing it happen laying a snare
Layered with clapping and seeing them clapping
Conversations finding their way in this shit that I'm rapping
See it's all about exchange it ain't all about the fame
I'm living upper middle class and people hardly know my name
Cause the dollars that I gain ain't at the course of rotting brains
I'm from a time that's been forgotten where the scholars entertain
Music with the message message with the music
Records for living reckless and records for rec improvement
Practicing what I'm preaching good and bad in me meeting
Too much of one or the other and your perception is skewed
Fix up and care less of others doings
Visions all about results what you perusing

So get yourself fixed up
I'll take you out around town
I swear you'll never witness anything quite as fine
Fake gold the gold is mine
Fake gold fake gold is mine
