Back in 2003 I went to a show at record shop that had the Grouch and Eligh playing, the opener was a group I'd never heard of before called The Procussions. Their style was unique and something I was far from use to. After the show I did a little research on them and in all honesty kind of forget about them. Then in 2006 when Constance by Mr. J Mederios came out a flashback of the concert popped in my mind. Immediately back on my radar I had a new found respect for this extremely talented front man of the group. Again with time, an out of sight out of mind type of mentality became of Mr. J. Now in 2012 I have no reason to ever neglect this artist again. Depth of lyrical content seems to be missing in most music today. One common adjective for describing a track is the amount of soul it has in it. When an artist trades in their moral fortitude for a paycheck the end result is a lifeless ballad. A song depraved from substance and creativity left with nothing more than dilapidation. Shad is one of the artists that still has soul in his tracks. And I don't mean it in that B.B. King kind of way, or maybe I kind of do. He gives real hope, and not the artificial Obama kind, rather the determination and perseverance required for real change. Shad has a sense of spirituality that supersedes any church, mosque, or temple. It's as if his connection comes from within the music he creates. That internal push, the last little bit of umph, that's what I call soul. You look at just about any Lil Wayne track and it sucks you in. Words can but tamely describe the importance of what men like Shadrach Kabango are for society. His lyrics are consistently forward thinking while keeping crosshairs aimed ever so accurately at their target; real change. Shad gently bashes his distaste for the current state of affairs, but don't get to thinking that he is doing so in a negative fashion. When people ask my what my beliefs are, whats important in life to me, or my cultural influences I have but one answer for them; Hip-Hop. In a society that appears to be plagued with piss poor excuses for morality it's rather refreshing to see something different. Hip-Hop gives me hope. Artists expressing their discontent with how things are and their unadulterated desire to make a positive change literally puts a tear to me eye.
